Faculty of Medicine | Research and impact

Our Faculty of Medicine research community are global leaders in biomedical research that improves the health and wealth of humanity.

Imperial’s Faculty of Medicine pioneers new ways to tackle real-world health challenges and inequalities.  From fundamental understanding of sub-cellular processes all the way through to populations worldwide, we continually push for advances that improve people’s lives. Delivering on Imperial’s ambitious strategy, our community works across all four faculties of Imperial, taking a convergence science approach to tackle global challenges.  We have pioneered the combination of biomedical, physical, engineering and life sciences to understand, prevent and treat disease. We provide a world-class research environment to recruit, retain, and train research leaders of the future. We proudly work in partnership with local communities to bring their lived experience to our work through co-design, partnership, and collaboration in research studies.

Our research is delivered through our eight academic departments. To maximise patient benefit, the Imperial College Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC) partners Imperial with The Institute of Cancer Research, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.  Together, we bring excellence in research and education to transform health outcomes. Our clinical work is underpinned by the NIHR Imperial Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) in partnership with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, which provides pivotal infrastructure that drives innovation and translation into clinical settings.

The Faculty of Medicine is led by the Dean, Professor Deborah Ashby. It is home to thousands of staff and has research funding in excess of £170 million per year.  Research is overseen by the Faculty Research Committee and the Vice Dean (Research), Professor Graham Cooke.
